The Cooperative Monitoring Center (CMC) welcomes Laura S.H. Holgate, Vice President for Materials Risk Management at the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and former U.S. Ambassador to the Vienna Office of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to the CMC Distinguished Speakers Series on January 25. In her talk, “Science in Service of Diplomacy: Fostering Connections,” Amb. Holgate will discuss the importance of scientific and technical knowledge to the understanding, creation and implementation of high-quality international security policy.

In her current role, Amb. Holgate designs and executes NTI’s activities to prevent nuclear terrorism, such as reducing quantities and enhancing security of nuclear and radiological materials around the world, promoting cooperation between the United States and key partners on nuclear and radiological security, and strengthening the global nuclear security architecture. In her role as ambassador, she advanced multilateral approaches to reduce global threats and seize opportunities in the areas of nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear security, verification of the Iran Deal, nuclear testing, counterterrorism, anti-corruption, drug policy, export control and the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

Amb. Holgate also launched the Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy program, designed to increase the presence, visibility and impact of women in nonproliferation, nuclear deterrence, nuclear security, disarmament, nuclear energy and other related areas.

This event will be held Monday, Jan. 25, 12:30-1:30 p.m. MST. Questions for Amb. Holgate may be sent to CMC@sandia.gov before or during the presentation. Participants are required to register by clicking the "Registration" link above.
